Developing a proof of concept Product Passport System and data model.
Industrial Symbiosis is a practice that can reduce the ecological impact of the industrial processes of groups of firms, particularly through circular economy initiatives, such as cross sector ecosystems based on resource exchanges; whether the resource is (critical) raw materials, secondary materials, by-products, waste or energy. The UK Government has set out its ‘Resource and Waste’ strategy for preserving the UK’s stock of material resources by minimising waste, promoting resource efficiency and moving towards a circular economy. This strategy outlines many priority areas for research and innovation but in particular calls for “bold new approaches to data on resources and waste” and that “High quality data, information and insights are essential for effective policy making”.
This project will fill an important and crucial gap in the national effort towards greener futures and net-zero. It will contribute to the development of the concept of digital product passports including cradle-to-cradle passports. It will contribute insights into the viability of product passports from a whole-systems, cross-industry perspective. It will design and test a candidate data model and technical implementation and provide valuable lessons learned for those wishing to develop capability in this area.
