Digitally Advanced Services – Heating-as-a-Service

Exploring smart thermal customer experiences and Servitization business models.

“Inter-disciplinary research is key to truly holistic approaches to designing not only smart customer experiences but the digital and data infrastructures needed for advanced services.”

Dr Melanie King

This project, led by Dr Sara Mountney at Sheffield Hallam University, comprised a team of researchers from Engineering, Systems, Design and Business disciplines. The project team worked with BAXI to explore how digitalization and systemic design approaches could specifically benefit their understanding and incorporation of the user experience in the development of new advanced services. This research was underpinned by research in to the current landscape of changing business models – particularly Heat-as-a-Service – and technological advances, as well as the wider policy and industrial context. The project aims:

  1. To take a customer-focused perspective to develop an in-depth understanding of a smart thermal comfort solution for two key market segments (householders and social housing landlords)
  2. To use this understanding to design and build a prototype of a digital platform that maps the expected customer journey for these new services.

My Contribution to the Project

My objective was to undertake a Horizon Scan of the current landscape and future opportunities, as well as advocate systems approaches to developing enterprise capability to deliver future advanced services.
