Dr Melanie King
Senior Lecturer in Systems Engineering, Academic Researcher and Digital Developer

ABOUT
I attended the University of Plymouth as an undergraduate in Architecture and much later in my career I received my doctorate in Computer Science from Loughborough University in 2017.
After periods of working as a software developer and Computer Aided Design (CAD) technician, I joined the Department of Design & Technology at Loughborough University in 1998, working as a research assistant on CAD practices and pedagogy. After a period of time running my own start-up, I joined the Faculty of Engineering as a Learning Technologist and worked there until 2010. From 2011 to 2017, I was the Head of Loughborough’s Centre for Engineering and Design Education (CEDE) and then Head of Digital Innovation, where I managed a highly successful team comprising technologists, educationalists, researchers and students delivering enhancement projects locally and nationally through internal, research and enterprise income. In 2017 I became a Lecturer in Systems Engineering in the Wolfson School at Loughborough University and in 2020 I gained recognition as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
I am a technologist and academic researcher, and have developed a variety of software and IT systems such as; integrated information systems, web applications, laboratory simulation software, data architectures and digital services. I am also an experienced IT and Project Manager with certifications as an Enterprise Architect (TOGAF 9.0 Certified), DSDM Agile Project Manager and Scrum Master.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research concerns advancing knowledge of the practice of digitilization within companies and whole industries. In particular I am interested in the way that information-intensive ecosystems are designed and engineered, and most importantly how systems are evaluated to help evidence what works and what does not. I predominantly use an action research approach and methods include; systems thinking, generic foresight processes, participatory research and theory-driven evaluative research methods. I am a member of the Advanced VR Research Centre and the Engineering Systems of Systems (ESoS) research group. For more information please explore the ‘Projects and Activities‘ section of my website.
I also supervise a number of PhD Students. If you are interested in undertaking a PhD under my supervision, please get in touch to discuss areas of potential interest.
